The Low Vision Interest Group is a very recently established specialty group, founded by eight ophthalmologists who desire to deliver quality low vision services to the Filipino people. They also envision that through this assemblage, the practice of Low Vision in the Philippines may benefit by its advancement and by the promotion of its awareness. This group is duly recognized by, and finds its home in the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology. This alliance is further concretized by the group’s mission vision, which states that “no Filipino citizen diagnosed with Low Vision, whether infant, child or adult will be deprived of the best ophthalmic care and rehabilitation, to reduce the functional impact of visual impairment, disability and handicap, and to promote the Activities of Daily Living so that the Filipinos may live the life they choose to live.” Furthermore, “the group hopes to encourage and train ophthalmologists to go into low vision practice.”
At its helm is Dr. Sheila Santos - Jimenez, as its first acting President. Supporting her in the task of steering the group towards relevant opportunities are Dr. Carmela Ongsiako -Isabela as Vice-President, Dr. Christine Therese Santos as Secretary, Dr. Rainier Victor Covar as Treasurer, and Dr. Genevieve Pantig - De Jesus as Public Relations Officer. Equally committed members, and completing the group are Drs. Benjamin Gerardo Cabrera, Fabian Arnel De Jesus, and Ian Paredes.
Current activities that the Low Vision Interest Group has been participating in are conducting lectures via the Lifelong Educational Access Program (LEAP) which is sponsored by the PAO for ophthalmology residents in training, as well as in the different training hospitals with the hope of further promoting and endorsing this field. Of late, the group has partnered with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth or PHIC) to help draft the provisions to be included in their circular regarding the Z benefits for children with Low Vision, as part of PhilHealth’s mandate to ensure financial risk protection for persons with disabilities.
